SQA: ADR Dangerous Goods Refresher

Course Summary

This course is for drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods who hold an ADR card that is due to expire. This course will help to refresh an ADR driver’s knowledge in regard to specific health and safety issues with keeping and transporting dangerous goods safely.

Course Objectives

ADR is divided into:

Core: Basic syllabus for carrying any class of dangerous goods in road tankers, tank containers, packages, drums, cylinders and loose in bulk. This is a mandatory category that all drivers must undertake.

Tanks: For carrying any class of dangerous goods, in road tankers or other tanker containers. This is an optional category.

Packages: For carrying any class of dangerous goods in sacks, drums, cylinders, cartons, skips, tipper or dust cart bodies etc. This is an optional category.

Seven Common Classes – these are the types of hazardous goods being transported. They are all optional categories:

  • Class 2: Gases; compressed, liquefied, dissolved under pressure or refrigerated
  • Class 3: Flammable liquids
  • Class 4: Flammable solids, substances liable to spontaneous combustion
  • Class 5: Oxidising substances and organic peroxides
  • Class 6: Toxic, harmful and infectious substances
  • Class 8: Corrosives – Acids and Alkalis
  • Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles, e.g. asbestos, PCBs and any substance or article not covered by the other classes

Maximum number of learners



Up to 5 days depending on the categories undertaken including examination day.




Delegates will be awarded a SQA ADR card, valid for 5 years. An ADR card must be refreshed in Year 4 to avoid your card expiring.

Drivers are also able to obtain a number of hours towards their Driver Periodic Training. Please let us know at time of booking if you would like to avail of this.
