ADR is divided into:
Core:Â Basic syllabus for carrying any class of dangerous goods in road tankers, tank containers, packages, drums, cylinders and loose in bulk. This is a mandatory category that all drivers must undertake.
Tanks:Â For carrying any class of dangerous goods, in road tankers or other tanker containers. This is an optional category.
Packages:Â For carrying any class of dangerous goods in sacks, drums, cylinders, cartons, skips, tipper or dust cart bodies etc. This is an optional category.
Seven Common Classes – these are the types of hazardous goods being transported. They are all optional categories:
- Class 2: Gases; compressed, liquefied, dissolved under pressure or refrigerated
- Class 3: Flammable liquids
- Class 4: Flammable solids, substances liable to spontaneous combustion
- Class 5: Oxidising substances and organic peroxides
- Class 6: Toxic, harmful and infectious substances
- Class 8: Corrosives – Acids and Alkalis
- Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles, e.g. asbestos, PCBs and any substance or article not covered by the other classes
